We reached the finale of our Season 74 concerts rather later than expected on September 11th with the Sacconi quartet and Simon Callaghan. The concert was held in St Andrews church, Colyton which has the perfect acoustic for the varied and exciting techniques used by the composer Ravel in the string quartet which was the first piece of the evening. The Sacconis have been playing together for 24 years and their instinctively sympathetic approach to the lyrical sections as seen on the first movement of Philip Bliss’s Piano quartet was lovely. Simon Callaghan joined the quartet for this piece, blending with them and adding to the tremendous energy of the last movement. Simon has visited SeatonMusic before and it was a joy to welcome him again. The third piece of the evening was Cesar Franck’s Piano quintet . This work was not well received when premiered in 1880 and presented to Saint Seans as a gift which he did not appreciate! However, the Sacconi’s and Simon Callaghan brought the music to life and their emotional, passionate playing was thrilling.

We are privileged to be able to bring such quality performances to Seaton and district. The 74th season was the last one planned by Iain MacDonald and we thank him for his research and endeavour which brought us a varied programme of music that was enjoyed by us all.
As we look forward to the 75th season, we anticipate another enjoyable season which starts with a young and vibrant group of wind instrumentalists, Ensemble Renard on October 16th at the Old Picture House.
We also are thrilled to welcome the piano back to Seaton Gateway. As a society we seek to encourage and support young players, and so we have planned a concert on October 9th which will see Alex Wilson play some well loved piano works and also introduce local talented young people to amaze us with their musicality. This concert starts at 6.30pm. In addition, we welcome back the Hot House Combo to the Old Picture house for a fun evening of swing music from the 20s, 30s and 40s.
