“The Lark Ascending” – Joel Munday & Julian Trevelyan

Joel Munday (violin) & Julian Trevelyan (piano)

Joel Munday played for us last season (with Alex Wilson) in Colyton and gave his debut performance of “The Lark Ascending”.  The solo violin soaring in the rafters of the church with just the hint of a piano accompaniment was so amazing we thought we had to share it with the good people of Sidmouth.  A Tillett Trust Debut Artist, and a dedicated proponent of music of our times in addition to the masterworks of old, Joel has had the privilege to work with composers including Pēteris Vasks and Osvaldo Golijov. The 25/26 season marks Joel’s professional solo debut, performing Mozart’s First Violin Concerto with the London Mozart Players. Other highlights include recitals with Julian Trevelyan and Sam Haywood, appearances at the Stift Festival and Two Moors Festival and performances of Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto No.2 and Brahms’ Double Concerto. In 2025, he was selected as a Tillett Debut Artist. He is also supported by the UK Artists Directory and Making Music. Joel made his concerto debut in 2017, performing Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Royal College of Music Junior Department Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jacques Cohen. He has attended festivals such as IMS Prussia Cove and Kronberg Academy’s Violin and Viola Masterclasses, working with pedagogues including Leonidas Kavakos, Shmuel Ashkenazi, Mihaela Martin, Joel Smirnoff and Vadim Gluzman.

Joel’s plays a violin crafted by Andreas Hudelmayer in 2024 and funded by the generosity of over 100 supporters, including Seaton Music.

Julian Trevelyan, who played for us in 2023, is a 26 year old concert pianist who performs regularly throughout Europe and in the UK.. He moved to France after winning the 2015 Long-Thibaud-Crespin international competition at the age of 16, becoming the youngest prize-winner in the competition’s history. He has since won prizes at international piano competitions such as the Leeds, Géza Anda & Horowitz.

He has appeared as a piano Soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, London Mozart Players & Worthing Symphony Orchestra in the UK.
